MUHI 4358 - A Historical and Aesthetic Examination of Film Music Practices From American and Other Traditions Credits: 3
A study of film music, including its historical development, deployment in different film genres, styles of various composers, interactions between “art music” composers and cinema (including classical music as used in film scores, art music composers composing for film, and composers as subjects of films), and issues of the psychology of film music. Explores not only how changes in culture and society affected films and their music since the coming of recorded sound to cinema in the 1920s, but also how cinema and its music have worked as forces of cultural and social change. Focuses primarily on American cinema, but draws examples from other traditions as well. Prerequisite: MUHI 3302 or consent of the instructor.
